Membership


Membership to Phi Beta Delta is open to international and American students, both graduate and undergraduate, who have distinguished themselves academically and in their extracurricular activities at KU. It also includes faculty and staff who have significantly contributed to international education at the university. Currently, the KU chapter has approximately 65 active students, faculty and staff members.

Why should I join Phi Beta Delta?

Phi Beta Delta is a prestigious, nationally recognized honor society with chapters across the country. Membership benefits include a network of people who are also interested in international education. You will have the opportunity to share your international experiences and/or expertise with other members of Phi Beta Delta at organization events. Members are also given preference for society awards, such as travel grants available for students.  

Eligibility

Undergraduate Students

  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.25.
  • Must be of at least junior status with a minimum of 30 credit hours earned at KU prior to induction.
  • Domestic students must have studied abroad, conducted research abroad, or had a comparable international experiences, and/or have been actively involved in promoting international understanding through extracurricular activities.
  • International students must have dedicated interest and commitment to international understanding by their extracurricular activities at the University of Kansas.

Graduate Students

  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.5. (Law school applications must have a GPA of 3.3)
  • Must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours at KU prior to induction.
  • Domestic students must have studied abroad, conducted research abroad, or had a comparable international experiences, and/or have been actively involved in promoting international understanding through extracurricular activities.
  • International students must have dedicated interest and commitment to international understanding by their extracurricular activities at the University of Kansas.

Students with international experience of merit differing from the conditions specified may also be considered for membership.

Faculty, Staff, Scholars

Must demonstrate evidence of active involvement in international endeavors, such as...

  • teaching courses with an international focus
  • overseas teaching
  • conducting research overseas and/or research on international topics
  • participating in overseas projects
  • administering study abroad or exchange programs
  • program development
  • providing courses or services to international students and scholars

Individuals with international experience of merit differing from the conditions specified may also be considered for membership.

Fees

  1.  One-time initiation fee for new members covers all materials required for induction, and it pays society and local dues for the first year: $35 for students and $55 for faculty, staff and scholars.*
  2.  To remain an active member, annual dues are collected each year in October. These cover both national and local dues: $25 for students and $35 for faculty, staff and scholars. Members should receive a renewal letter and form by email, or you can download the renewal form here.
Checks or money orders in U.S. dollars should be made payable to Phi Beta Delta. The renewal form and payment should be sent to Phi Beta Delta in care of The Office of International Programs, 1450 Jayhawk Blvd., 300 Strong Hall, Lawrence, KS 66045.
 
*National society induction fees and dues are $50. Thus, the local chapter contributes $15 to help cover the cost of each new student member. The chapter retains $5 from each new faculty, staff, and scholar membership.
